How to Choose the Perfect Location for Summer Family Photos (Portland, Oregon Guide)

If you’re planning summer family photos in Portland, you already know that summer here is something special.

The light, vitamin D, the long evenings, everyone finally coming out of hibernation and wanting to be outside again makes easily one of the best times of year for family photos.

And one of the best (and hardest) parts?

There are so many good options.

You could be at the coast, out in the Gorge, by the river, in a field, or right in your own backyard, and each one is going to feel completely different.

So instead of trying to figure out the “best” location, the goal is really to figure out:

What kind of setting feels like your family, and how far you actually want to go to get it.

Here’s a breakdown of the most popular summer session options around Portland… what they look like, how they feel, and what to consider when choosing.

Columbia River Gorge Family Photos

About 45–90 minutes from Portland, depending on the exact spot.

The Gorge is one of the most iconic summer locations in the area. Wide open views, rolling hills, and that golden light that just stretches forever.

This is the kind of session that feels like a full adventure and not just showing up, taking photos, and heading home.

What it looks like:

  • Kids exploring open hills and wide spaces
  • Golden light at sunset with big, scenic views
  • Wildflowers in early summer, warm tones later on
  • River views or access depending on location and time of summer

What to consider:

  • It does require a drive (and a later evening for the best light but WORTH IT, PROMISE)
  • Many families turn it into a full day, stops along the way, dinner after, making it part of the experience

Seasonal note:
Wildflowers (including sweet peas) typically bloom late June through early July, but this area is beautiful all summer, even outside peak bloom.

If you’re making the trip out this way, I have another blog post written about my favorite stops/eats/drinks you can check out here.

Oregon Coast Family Photos

Typically around 1.5–2 hours from Portland (my favorite spot is near Cannon Beach)

The coast brings a completely different feel than anything inland. It’s magical all year round, in my opinion. It’s open, windy, a little unpredictable, and honestly really fun because of that.

What it looks like:

  • Running along the shoreline, chasing waves
  • Wind moving through hair and clothing
  • Kids getting sandy, laughing, fully in it

What to consider:

  • It’s more of a distance commitment
  • In the summer months we mostly have sun, but some days can be overcast and that is OK, I actually love the softness of an overcast day at the Oregon coast
  • Best for families who are happy to lean into whatever the coast gives us

Local Nature Parks & Open Fields

Throughout the Portland area (often 10–30 minutes away).

This is the most flexible and accessible option for families wanting to stay closer to home, and it still delivers that classic summer look.

What it looks like:

  • Running through open space at golden hour
  • Soft green fields early in the season
  • Tall golden grass later in the summer

What to consider:

  • Sometimes these spots get crowded on weekends especially, best to book on a weekday if possible
  • Unpredictable when grasses get cut short, which can change the look of some spots
  • Great if you want something beautiful and simple without a big time commitment

Seasonal note:

  • June = green + daisies/wildflowers in some spots
  • Late July–August = golden, glowy tones

Mt. Hood / Mountain Areas

About 60–90 minutes from Portland.

Heading toward the mountains gives you a completely different backdrop than the city.

More trees, cooler air, and a different kind of summer landscape.

What it looks like:

  • Exploring trails and open mountain areas
  • Deeper greens and later-season wildflowers
  • A more tucked-away, rugged, nature-heavy setting

What to consider:

  • Similar drive time to the Gorge
  • Best later in the summer when access and blooms are at their peak

Your Own Backyard (or Somewhere Personal)

Right where you are. Your space with your people. Your backyard, front porch – eating popsicles, running through sprinklers, doing chalk, riding bikes. This is where we capture your family in your own element, and I really love this option!

What it looks like:

  • Kids playing in familiar spaces
  • Climbing, running, snuggling in spots they already love
  • A session that feels like a slice of your real life

What to consider:

  • The focus is less on the “location” and more on your family
  • Perfect if you want something relaxed and meaningful without coordinating a bigger outing

River Spots near Portland

Usually 20–40 minutes from Portland.

These are some of the easiest “adventure” locations without a big drive.

There’s always something for kids to do, which makes sessions feel really natural and easy.

What it looks like:

  • Throwing rocks, splashing, climbing on logs
  • Water catching the light as kids move through it
  • Constant interaction and movement

What to consider:

  • Kids will get a little wet (and usually love it)
  • Great option if you want something playful without traveling far

When to Schedule Your Summer Session

Timing matters depending on the look you’re drawn to:

  • June → lush greens, daisies, fresh early summer feel
  • Late June–Early July → wildflowers (especially in the Gorge)
  • Late July–August → tall golden grass, warmer tones, later sunsets

There’s no wrong time — just different looks depending on what you love.

FAQ: Summer Family Photos in Portland

Q: How far in advance should we book?
A: The sooner the better! Getting it on the calendar sets these photos as a priority to you, and gives more time to plan location, outfits, etc. Summer tends to fill steadily with June first, then July and August. Booking a few weeks to a couple months ahead is ideal.

Q: What time of day are sessions?
A: Most outdoor sessions happen at golden hour (just before sunset) for the best glowy, golden light. However, I can be flexible! We can do morning sessions and even afternoon IF we pick the right location… lighting is everything!

Q: What if we don’t know what location to choose?
A: Totally normal. I help with that all the time and will send a guide once your session is booked. You don’t need to have it figured out before reaching out.

Q: What should we wear?
A: I have a whole guide I send out on that too! I love helping with this and have several resources that make planning outfits a breeze.
