Columbia River Gorge Photoshoot: The Secret to a Fun Loving Family Session

This Columbia River Gorge photoshoot with the H family was our second shoot together, but it felt like hanging out with old friends. I’ve so enjoyed seeing glimpses of their family growing over the last few years on Instagram. We’ve bonded over many things from our adorable and spirited daughters to recipes to home decor, and I love when clients become friends. The H family has given me many client referrals (the best compliment a photographer can receive), and I truly feel like they are my own personal cheerleader!

We both have a connection to the Columbia River Gorge, so it was a no brainer when it came to where to have this family photoshoot. Mom trusted my vision for their photos and was up for anything. That was great because this location has it all! Water, rocks, rolling hills, tall grasses, winding paths, amazing light – it doesn’t get any better than that.

This crew didn’t need a ton of prompting when it came to posing. There was so much laughter, playing, and being silly – the best way to capture a family in their element! These parents are so natural with their kids, and I can tell they have read my family session guides. They definitely knew how I like to shoot and that getting your kids to laugh and have fun is what brings out the best moments and images.

It was SO fun letting the kids play in the water at the end of the session. These are some of my favorite images! When I encouraged their little girl to splash me, the joy on her face was incredible. I love that the parents just let their kids be kids and didn’t care about getting wet or dirty.

It’s so important to hire a photographer because you love their work and ALSO trust their vision and process. I have found that when you let the session flow naturally, you can really make space for magic to happen. Playing in the water was the perfect way to end the evening.
