If you’re a Portland-area family starting to think about photos this year, I’m going to say something that might surprise you:
Spring is the best season for family photos.
Not fall.
Fall gets all the attention. The colors, the traditions, the holiday deadlines.
But spring in Portland?
Spring is when everything comes back to life.
The trees are blooming, the greens are lush, the light is soft, and everyone is finally ready to get outside again.
And honestly, it’s when I do some of my best work as a Portland family photographer because I’m coming out of a slower season feeling rested, inspired, and excited to create again.
If you’ve always defaulted to fall photos, this is your sign to try something different.
Here’s how to build a spring session that actually feels like you.

Spring in the Portland area doesn’t happen all at once. It unfolds in waves, which means there are a lot of beautiful options depending on timing.
Early April
Cherry blossoms and magnolias start blooming around Portland neighborhoods and parks.
Late April – Early May
Columbia River Gorge wildflowers begin to peak. This is a short, fleeting window about 1.5 hours east of Portland, with rolling hills covered in yellow balsamroot and purple lupine.
May
Lush green fields, deeper blooms, lupine, and vibrant landscapes everywhere.
Late May – June
Daisies, sweet peas, tall grass glowing in golden light.
Each window offers a completely different look, which is part of what makes spring sessions so fun and versatile.

One of the best things about spring family photos in Portland is the variety of locations.
You don’t have to go far to get something beautiful.
Close to Portland:
Nature parks, open fields, river paths, and blooming trees.
Columbia River Gorge (near + far):
There are incredible scenic spots within 30–45 minutes of Portland, and then the full wildflower experience further out (about 1.5 hours) during peak bloom.

Oregon Coast:
Spring is one of the most underrated times for coastal sessions. Fewer crowds, lush green cliffs, soft light, and space to explore.
At home or nearby:
Backyards, quiet streets, and familiar places can be just as meaningful — especially with young kids.
The key is choosing a location where your family can move, explore, and interact naturally.
That’s where the magic happens.

Spring is the season to lighten things up.
You don’t need to match.
You don’t need to play it safe.
And I say this with love: let’s skip the navy.
Instead, think in styles:
Playful + Fresh
Gingham, florals, pops of red, blue + yellow combinations
Soft + Earthy
Creams, warm neutrals, linen, flowy dresses, texture
Relaxed + Real
Denim, cozy knits, barefoot, layered pieces
Spring light photographs movement beautifully, so anything that flows, layers, or adds texture will elevate your images. Read more about Spring styling here.

This is the part people don’t talk about enough.
Spring sessions feel easier.
There’s no holiday pressure.
No rushing to meet a deadline.
No packed fall schedules.
Families are more relaxed.
Kids have space to play.
The whole experience feels lighter.
And that shows up in your photos.
