How to Book Your Dreamy In-Home Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby is such an exciting (and let’s be honest, slightly chaotic) time, and there’s no better way to capture those fresh, tiny, sleepy moments than with an in-home newborn photography session. These sessions are relaxed, natural, and tailored to your family’s unique vibe. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you book your session and know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Timing Is Everything

Newborns are at their sleepiest and tiniest during the first 1-2 weeks after birth, making this the perfect time for your session. That said, life happens, and the timing is totally flexible. When you book, we’ll set a placeholder date around two weeks after your due date. Once your little one arrives, just let me know, and we’ll finalize the exact session date. Easy peasy!

Step 2: Secure Your Spot

Ready to make it official? Booking is simple! Head to my online booking page to reserve your session. This holds your spot on my calendar, and from there, we’ll work out all the details together.

Step 3: Prepping for Your Session

Once your session is booked, I’ll send over a guide packed with tips to help you prepare. Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect:

  • Declutter the Key Spaces: I typically shoot in the primary bedroom, living room, and nursery. These are the coziest spots with the best natural light. A quick tidy-up is all you need—focus on clearing bedside tables, coffee tables, and similar areas but you do NOT need to stress over having a perfect home!
  • Natural Light is King: Open blinds and curtains to let that soft, natural light flood in, and be sure to turn off any overhead lights or lamps (they can cast unflattering colors).
  • Feed Baby Before the Session: A full tummy makes for a happy, sleepy baby, which is ideal for those snuggly photos. Things go best when they are fed right before I arrive so they are ready for a snooze.
  • Outfits and Accessories: Keep baby’s look simple—a well-fitted onesie, romper, or footless pajamas work perfectly. Bonus points for showing off those adorable baby toes! Have a few favorite swaddles and blankets ready, especially textured or patterned ones that photograph beautifully.
  • Family Wardrobe Tips: Coordinated tones > matching outfits. Earth tones and soft neutrals with a few pops of color (like rust or olive green) create a timeless, cohesive look. Avoid logos, fluorescent colors, and everyone wearing the same shade (e.g., all white).

Step 4: During the Session

The vibe is all about keeping things laid-back and stress-free. When I arrive, I’ll do a quick walkthrough to find the best spots for natural light. I’ll guide you through everything—whether it’s gently posing with your baby or capturing candid moments. If you have older siblings or pets, they’re absolutely welcome! We’ll make it fun with games, cuddles, and maybe even a treat or two for cooperation.

Step 5: After the Session

About three weeks after our session, you’ll receive an email letting you know your gallery is ready. From there, you can:

  • View your gallery and select your favorite images.
  • Share and download images in both full-resolution (for printing) or web-size, for sharing online.
  • Order professional prints directly from your gallery. Trust me, these photos deserve to live on your walls, not just your phone!
